Nellore

Sri Talapagiri Ranaganatha swamy Temple is located in Nellore city and is about 5kms away from Nellore Bus stand. RanganadaSwamy Temple in Nellore is more than 600years old.  This temple is situated on the banks of the river Pennar and is marked by a huge 29 Mts tall Galigopuram with seven gold kalasams and its architectural splendour. The annual Rath Yathra of the God is a much awaited ritual in Nellore.
There are seven kalisams, which brings beauty to the temple. Every year during the month of March-April (varies according to Hindu calendar) grand festival is celebrated. These are called Brahmotsavam. 
             On the bank of river penna sri kashyapa Maharshi performed yagna and as a fruit of his penance conferred upon him the gift of establishing himself as Ranganadha Swamy at Nellore in 7th cebtury, by Pallava ruler Sri Rajaraja Narendra. Subsequently in 13th century Sri Jatha Varma has offered precious stones and metal to Lord Ranganadha Swamy. The Andhra Maha Bharatam i.e. from Viratprvam to the end of the epicwas written by the poet Sri kavi Brahma Tikkana, on the bank of pennar river.  On the east there is seven storied Maha gopuram, south Sri Ranganayaki Lakshmi Devi) temple and beautiful mirror dias, west is sacred Pennar river and north Sri Andal Ammavari temple.
 





Jonnawada:
Mallikarjuna Swamu kamakshi tai temple, Jonnawada which is located about 12 kms from Nellore. The destination is also well connected for Railway station at Nellore. A famous Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Kamakhsi tai temple is located on the bank of river Pennar, 12 Km from Nellore. It attracts many piligirims. The Village is part of Buchireddipalem Mandal. In tretayuga Mahamuni Kasyapa Brahma performed yagna and pleased Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy thus this place is named as ‘Yagnavatika Jonnawada’. Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Kamakhsi tai grant to the innumerable devotes their desires, as their God head. Since then he continues conferring boons and his blessings on his devotees.  This temple is constructed in the year 1150( Tretayuga). The goddess  Kamkshi is belived as an incarnation of Shakti. A ‘Sri Chakram’ was installed here by Sri Jagadguru Sankaracharya.  Pilgrims take a holy dip in the lake known as Kachpateertham, near the temple, which washes away all their bad karma. Brahma Rushi Sri Kashyap Mahamuni visited Bhoolokam (The Earth) and wanted to perform Yagna and chosen north of vedadri as Yagna Vatika (place to perform yagna) After successful completion of the Yagna a bright light appeared. It has spread over the whole bhoolokam. Later Lord Eswara appeared as Lord Mallikarjuna, who came out from fire of Yagna.
        There is bus service from Nellore to Jonnawada. For the convenienc of the pilgrims there are choultries of  the Devastanam and TTD and also private choultries. Every year, during the celebration of Brahmstsavam in the month of Vaisaka, lakhs of devotees throng the holy centre to worship the goddess to attain salvation and Friday is the day very dear to Kamakshitai. One can find persons, persecuted by evil spirits, circumambulating in the temple precinct. A bathing ghat has been built on the bank of the Penna, for the convenience of the pilgrims.






Narasimhakonda:
Vedagiri Lakshmimarasimha Swamy devastanam came into being nearly 500 years ago, on the summit of Narasimhakonad. According to the rock inscriptions, this temple was built by the Pallava king Narsimha Varma in the ninth century. Legend goes that the sage Kasyapa established the temple on the bank of Pinakini. And the vedic scripture “Brahmapurana” reveals that the seven sages (Saptarishis) performed “yagnam” (Sacrifice) on the top of Narasimhakonda. The seven (Koneru) tanks were renovated with Mandapas on the hilltop . The holy place lies 15Km. away from Nellore, on the southern bank of the river Pinakini. Every year “Brahmotsavams” are celebrated here in the month of May. Jonnawada is to the north of the river.
 
 





Penchalakona:-
This is a very ancient sacred place (pilgrim centre). Lord Narasimha manifested Himself here as a huge of rock in “Yoga mudra” (in an entwined contemplative posture) and hence it acquired the name of “Penusila” (huge rock) and in course of time became famous as “Penchalakona”. Legend has it that after slaying the demon Hiranya Kasipa, Lord Narsimha bathed in Penchalakona and withdrew that “Avatara”(incarnation) of Narasimha, shedding His anger and ferocity. The Lord here goes by the name of Somasila Narasimhaswamy and has become one of the  Nava Narasimhas (nine manifestations). People belive that because the sage Kanva resided in this area in the past, the river flowing here acquired the name Kanva Nadi and that with efflux of time it became Kandaleru. It is  also learnt that the temple was renovated in the 10th century.
           Penchalkona lies at the foothills of Veligondalu (mentioned earlier), at a distance of 80 km., from Nellore. Narasimha Jayanthi is celebrated every year in the month of May and devotees flock specially on Saturday. The Devestanam choultries provide facilities to the piligrims and there is bus service too.
 





Mannar Poluru:-
   
Alghu Malluru Krishna Swamy temple is existing in the Mannarpoluru Village, right from the time of Telugu Chola rulers. The village is close-by to Sullurupet, at a distance of 103 Km. from Nellore. It was built in the 17th century by Bangaru Yadama Nayudu, the living place of mallayodas or wrestlers. According to a legend, it was here that Lord Sri Krishna defeated Jambavantha in a duel and married his daughter Jambavati and that Lord MahaVishnu deflated the bloated ego of Garutmata here alone. Apart from the idol of Satyabhama and Jambavati, the two consorts of Lord Krishna, the idol of Jambavantha creating the illusion of shedding tears are bound to amaze the viewers. One cannot help marvelling at the sculptural splendour exuded by the idols of the beauties.
 





Chengalamma Temple - Sullurupet
Goddess Chengalamma Parameswari manifested Herself in the village of Sullurupet which lies 100Km. away from Nellore on the Kolkata-Chennai highway and the temple for Her was built on the bank of the Kanlangi river. History tells us that it was established during the fourth and fifth centuries. People also refer to her as the village goddess “Tenkali”. With the passage of time, she is being worshipped regularly by devotees as Chengalamma. Devotees turn up in large number to witness “Chengalamma Jatara” (fair).
            The Village goddess   who was called Tankali gained reputation as Sullurupet Chengalamma Thalli and her idol in the temple faces the sea. Devotees from different parts of the State visit the place and fulfil their vows, refering the goddess as the mother who grants boons liberally. The naturally-formed image of the goddess adorning the hanging roots (vooda) of the banyan tree is really an awe-inspiring spectacle.
 





Somasila Dam
Somasila is one of the biggest Irrigation Project in the District. The project is envisaged to create Irrigation potential. It is constucted across River Pennar and is situated near Somasila Village of Ananthasagaram Mandal, Nellore District. Since it is located in eastern ghats situated at the out skirts of the district, natural beauty is nose worthy. There is a temple in the village called Someswara Temple blessed by the Lord Siva  on the other side of River Pennar an Ashram is situated. Tourist Population including school children are gradually increasing owing to its importance. It can be developed as a Very good Tourist Centre.
 






Kandaleru Dam
Kandaleru Dam which is located about 60 kms away form Nellore. The destination is also well connected for State Highway from Nellore to Kadapa via Rapur & Rajampet. It was constructed across the Kandaleru river. This river originates in Velegonda hills and it  flows across Gudur . This being World’s Biggest Earth Dam with 68 TMC Water Storage spread over  11 kilometre which is supplying Drinking water to Tamilanadu is a Pictorious Spot with Hillocks and Forest around. One Government Guest house has constructed with 4 suites, Meeting hall and a Dnining hall with kichen for official purpose. It attracts many pilgrims. The Dam is a part  of Rapur Mandal.
 






Udayagiri Fort:
Udayagiri Fort  which is Located about 100 kms. From Nellore. Udayagiri Fort commanding at a hight of 3079 feet. Boasts of great natural beauty. The hill side has lush vegetation and beautiful waterfalls. The ruined fort is attracting the Tourists in a big way. However, the acccess is only by steps and there is no road to the Fort. During the rule of the Gajapathis and the  Vijayanagar Rulers, this Town grew to great splendour. The ruins of 365 Temples found in the Town reflected the sculputure and archetecture of various periods. The structure on the hill such as the Ranganatha Temple reflects Chola culture, the Balakrishna Mandiram reflects Pallava culture and the Paruveta Mandapam reflects Vijayanagara Culture. Other structures include Chinna Masjid and pedda Masjid. A great
Sufi Saint belonging to the 18th Century. Rahamathulla Nayab Rasool got absorbed in the higher selfhere. Every year the Sandal Festival is celebreated on the 26th of Rabi-UI-Aval month.
           The Hill of Udayagiri is also popularly known a Sanjeevi Hills as there are so many medicinal plants on the hill. This place can be developed on par with Golconda Fort of Hyderabad. It is possible to introduce attraction like Light and Sound Show etc.,
 


 


Pulicat Lake:
 Pulicat Lake is the  second largest brakish water lagoon in India spread over the two States of Andhra Pradesh and Tamilanadu adjacent to the Bay of Bengal. It extends over six hundred squire kilometers in Andhra Pradesh covering the five Mandals of Tada, Sullurupet, Doravari satram, Chittamur, Dugarajupatnam of Nellore District.
           It is a bird watchers paradise. Water birds and other birds like Flamingoes, Painted storks, Egrets, Grey Pelican, Grey herons, pintails, Black winged stilts, Shovelers, Terns etc., Visit this lake . These migratory birds visit during winter  as the lake offers food and protection from predators. The lake was notified as a Bird Sanctuary in 1976. vide G.O.U/s 18 wild life (protection) Act.
           Further the lake is connected to the National High Way, and is only 80 Km. from Chennai. It is also very near to the Sriharikota Atomic Missile Range (S.H.A.R).
 


 


Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary:             
Nelapattu bird sanctuary is one of the largest Pelicanary in South East Asia with more than 1500 pelicans and other birds visiting every year. The Sanctuary is very near to the National High way -5.
The big fresh water tank of Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary and the presence of good number of “ Barringtonia Acutangula” trees which can tolerate inundation for longer periods in the tank bed and fore shore area make this sanctuary a heaven for a broad spectrum of Bird species for both breeding and roosting purposes. Many winter migratory birds from Siberian countries are visiting this sanctuary since & long time. It is a breeding ground for some of the rare and endangered species like Grey Pelicans, Open-billed storks, Little cormorants, Sponbills, white ibies, Night Herons etc., A wide variety of birds, like Egrets, Tern, Ducks, Waders etc., rest here.
There is an Environmental Education Centre in the Sanctuary with a Museum, Library and Auditorium with audio Visual Equipment for screen slides, Films etc., on wild life watch towers are also aavailable to watch the birds at the Sanctuary.
 





Sri Mulasthaneswara Swamy Temple: Nellore.
The Temple of Sri Mulasthaneswara Swamy was built, 1400 years ago, to the west of Nellore. As the Lord manifested Himself under a “Nelli” tree, a temple was built there itself. Manumasidhi rulers constructed the “Raja Gopuram” (Royal tower of the temple). Legend goes that the poet Tikkana Somayaji translated Mahabhratam into telugu only after making his obeisance to the deity.
 
 
 
 
 
 





Mallam – Sri Subramanya Swamy Temple:
Malla village lies on the Nayudupeta – Duggarajupatnam road in the Chittamuru mandal and is 96 km away from Nellore. The temple was constructed by the Chola rulers of the 10th and 11th Centuries. The “Vasantala Mandapam” here is a shining example of sculpture of  exllence. The “Vasantala Mandapam” is strikingly sculpted in the form of a chariot drawn by a pair of horses. Episodes and events from the epic of Ramayana and Siva puranam have been sculpted splendidly on the pillars of the Mandapam.  The Veera Kallulu “ of the veera saivas are also found here. The 64 pillars of the Vasantha Mandapam are tastefully decorated with pictures pf creepers and tales from Ramayanam, Bharatham and Bhagavatam. Many lovely sculptures adorn the sides and lower part of the Mandapam. The temples of the consorts of Subramanyaswamy – Sri Valli, Her encourage abd Devaseba lie in the inner “Prakaram” (compound wall) and opposite the “ Dwaram” (entrance) of Subraanyaswami Idol.
 


 


Kasumuru – Masthana vali Dargah:
The tomb of Syed karimulla Khadiri lies in Kasumuru village, which is situated on the west of Venkatachalam Mandal 35 km.away from Nellore. Devotees refer to him as kasumuru Msthanayya, agreat : Fakir” supposed to have belonged to 18th century. The ailing, the planet harassed, and the childs, worship at the fakir’s tomb. Every year, on the 26th day of the auspicious period of “kabbiul-aval”, “Urusu” (fair) is celebrated with fervour. One can reach the place by bus from Nellore.



 


 


A.S.Peta – Dargah:
It is located at about 60 km. from Nellore City. A.S.Peta Stand for  Anuma samudram Peta. There is a big Dargah here which is ancient and is known to be Khaja Rahamatulla Dargah. It is one of the unique place  where Hindus  and Muslims blend together and stand as an illustration of National integrity. Devoties from different parts of the Country used to come to this place without distinction. The ornamental work of thhe dome is worth to seen. Every year Urusu celebrated where large number of devoties gather here for blessings.
 
 
 
 


 


Golagamudi: Bhagavan Sri Venkaiahswamy Mandiram
It is located at abovt 15 Km. from Nellore City which belongs to Venkatachalam Mandal. One of the Sage called Venkaiah lived earlier during middle of the 20th Century and got Mahasamadhi at this place. People worshiped them as Venkaiah Swamy or Baghavan Venkaiah Swamy, every Saturday there is a gathering to worship the Swamy. Similarly, during August every year “ Aradhana” or Annual function be celebrated where large number of devoties used to gether for the purpose of getting blessed. Devotees are provided free catering those who visited the Samadhi. It became one of the popular Pilgrim centre in the district.

Visakaptnam

SIMHACHALAM
Simhachalam is a place of pilgrimage in Visakhapatnam mandal.  It is situated on  the Simhachalam range of hills about 16 km. from Visakhapatnam connected by both rail and road.  The Simhachalam temple, the man lion  incarnation   of  Vishnu  is  the most  famous, the

richest and the best sculptured shrine.  The word Simhachalam etymologically means the hill of lion.
The temple of Varaha Lakshminarasimha is situated on the hill which is 244 meters above the sea level.  The way up to the temple runs through the glen covered with pineapple fields besides mango, jack and other fruit trees.  Architecturally this ancient temple deserves high praise.  It contains a square shrine surmounted by a high  tower, a portico in front with a small tower, a square sixteen pillared mandapam facing the portico and an enclosed verandah, all made of dark granite.  All these are richly and delicately carved with conventional and floral ornaments and scenes from the Vaishnavite puranas.  One of the pillars locally known as the Kappa stambam is believed to possess great curative powers.  There is a stone car with stone wheels and prancing stone horses.
The image of the diety is small and always kept covered with sandal paste   In May every year  the sandal paste is removed ceremonially at the festival called chandana yatra which is attracted by thousands of people allover the country especially from surrounding areas of Orissa state.  On the north side of the temple there is an excellent Natya mandapam  where Kalyanotsavam is performed.  This mandapam is supported by 96 pillars of black stone, exquisitely carved and arranged in sixteen rows of six each.  The exact age of the temple is not known, but it contains an inscription dated as far back as AD 1098-99 of the Chola King Kulottunga-1 who conquerred the Kalinga territories.  Another inscription shows that a queen of the Velanadu Chief Gonka 111(AD 1137-56) covered the image with gold.  A third says that the eastern Ganga King Narasimha-I built the central shrine the Mukhamandapam, the Natya mandapam and the enclosing Varandah in black stone and the other grants inscribed on its walls make it a place of historical importance.  The most important festivals celebrated here are 1) The Kalyanam of Varaha Lakshminarasimha (March-April) 2) Chandana Yatra (May) and 3) Visakha Poornima (May) and large number of devotees congregate here during these festivals.  Apart from the religious importance attached to the place, Simhachalam is a place of enchanting scenic beauty.

VISAKHAPATNAM
Visakhapatnam, the District Head Quarters of the District, the  revenue Division and the Mandal of the same name is situated on the Madras-Howrah broadguage line.  The name Visakhapatnam is named after “VAISAKHA’ or ‘KARTIKEYA’ the lord of Valour.  The
city is built along the seashore of the Bay of Bengal and it is bounded and broken by the Bold headland called the ‘Dolphin’s Nose’.  This place is also known as Black Mores hill.  It is a bustling Industrial and commercial centre surrounded by hills, beautiful beaches and lush green nature.  The undulating terrain within the city is emphasised by three hills – the Ross Hill housing a Roman Catholic Church, the path way leading to which is strewn with Catholic icons.  The Second hillock Dargakonda has a mosque and  the tomb of Muslim saint who was revered for his prophecies and the third hill is called Sri Venkateswara Konda with a temple built by Captain Blackmoor in 1886.  It has its own importance educationally because it is the seat of Andhra University.  The places of interest in the city include the Dolphin’s Nose, Light House with 7 Million Candle power covering 64 Kms., range  harbour, BHPV, Hindustan Shipyard, HPCL, Coramondal Fertilizers Factory, KGH, Circuit House on the Hill, a beautiful beach near Ramakrishna Mission and an airport etc.

KAILASAGIRI
Kailasagiri is a picturesque  hill over looking the sea is a natural  gift with 350 acres available has been developed into a lush green park has a panoramic sea view with a serene atmosphere with water sprinklers, microwave repeater station, beautiful garden locations
and recent flower clock titanic view point making it an outstanding tourist spot.  On the top of the hill a giant statue of Sivaparvatulu which is recently illuminated and Sanku Chakra and Namalu of lord Venkateswara are established.   Hitherto a road is being formed on the hill from Simhachalam gives much attraction to the pilgrims.  Further, recently a beautiful rope way from Foot hill to the picturesque mountains has been erected for the benefit of pilgrims.

VUDA PARK
VUDA park established in vast area has beautiful greenary and panoramic sea view had a dancing musical fountain sprinkling with colourful up and downs dancing along beat of the music, boating facility and skating rink, has also facilities like pleasure rides on
horses and camels which are very fond for children and a well equipped gymanisum.

LUMBINI PARK
Lumbini Park is located on the beautiful beach road with the Buddha Statue in the middle of the park and is gifted with idyllic syivan hills on one side and the blue sea on the other is a great attraction to the tourist public.
 

RAMAKRISHNA MISSION
The Ramakrishna Mission Ashram has been constructed in 1938 overlooking in the Sea presenting the panoramic view of the rising sun. The Ashram conducts spiritual retreats for the devotees and also providing services in Educational, Cultural, Medical, Relief and Rehabilitation to the poor and needy.

RAMAKRISHNA MISSION BEACH
The Ramakrishna Mission Ashram beach is a beautiful spot for relaxation and pleasure is a natural beautic scene. There is an imposing Kali Temple near this beach. The aquarium here is an added attraction. The roaring sounds of sea gives enormous pleasure.

MUDASARLOVA
Mudasarlova, the name itself depicts is a valley formed by the natural hills is situated 10 Km. from Visakhapatnam. It has a lake that supplies drinking water to city. The Municipal Corporation, Visakhapatnam has developed this into a beautiful park with different types of green plants and orchards is a beautiful picnic spot attracting good number of tourists and public.

DOLPHIN’S NOSE
A conspicuous land mark in Visakhapatnam the Dolphin’s Nose is a huge rocky head land 174 meters high and 358 meters above sea level jutting out into the sea resembling the shape of Dolphin. The powerful beacon of the light house set on rock at sea directs ships 65 Km. away.

ROSS HILL
The famous Ross Hill on the seashore is a place enveloping for three religions viz., Dargakonda has a mosque and a shrine of a Muslim sage Lashaque Madina and Sri Venkateswara Konda has a temple which was built by  Capt.  Blackmoor in  1886  and  the
third shrine is a holy place for Christians where Lord Velanganimata abode on top of the hill.

VICTORY AT SEA
This War Memorial (Victory at Sea) was built in 1996 by Eastern Naval Command to Commemorate the Indian Navy Victory at Sea in 1971. The beautiful landscape and colored fountain around the monument is further beautiful by the elegant war tanker Ajanta and War Flight.

KALI TEMPLE
Bhavatarani Charitable Trust was constructed the famous Kali Temple in 1984 on the Beach road. The Temple architecture is very unique. The uniqueness of Siva Temple is its Linga made of 10 Kgs. single stone called Rasalinga.

KURUPAM TOMB
The 100 year old Tomb near beach was built in memory of Rani of Kurapam. Its architectural style is spectacular with an amalgamation of the sikara and the dome in the same monument the structure has carvings of the Acanthus leaf, deities and floral motifs.

SUBMARINE MUSUEM
Kurusura and originally decommissioned submarine is located on the sands of the R.K.Beach is developed into a museum. This project is jointly taken up by the NSDRC and Eastern Naval Command. The estimated cost is around 2.55 crore and it is the first of its kind in Asia and second in the world and is opened for public.

VISAKHA MUSEUM
The Visakha Museum was opened in 1991 to preserve the house collections from the cultural and social heritage of the city of the Visakhapatnam.

YARADA BEACH
The Yarada Valley is surrounded by hills and the beach is an enchanting seashore with lovely rocks and the soft pebbles spread across the beach is fabulous with its exotic blend of golden sands and the lush green stretch of hills is a picturesque landscape for tourists.

GANGAVARAM BEACH
Gangavaram Beach is situated very closely to the Steel Plant and on account of its beautiful location attracts number of tourists and film makers.

MUTYALAMPALEM BEACH AND CREEK
The small hill by name Syamala Konda and Seashore in front of the beach is attractive and beautiful and in the middle of the stretch between the seashore and the hill is a stream flows through the shore into the sea is in L shape and is worth seeing and interesting which is a decent serene and peaceful place.

RUSHIKONDA BEACH
Rushikonda is 8 Km. away from Visakhapatnam with clean golden Beaches, is an ideal place for swimming and wind surfing in picturesque settings A.P.Tourism has 12 elegant cottages overlooking the beach for comfortable accommodation for tourists. Proposed to
construct a swimming pool and also to introduce water sports are on the anvil.

TOTLAKONDA
The name Totlakonda has been derived from the presence of rock cut throughs hewn in the bed rock of various shapes, sizes with 4 to 8 steps in the hillock by which water has been drawn for drinking water purpose.    Thotlakonda     lies    about   15 Km.     from
Visakhapatnam in beach road located 128 meters high above sea level. The archaeological excavations reveals antiquities like Maha stupa Viharas, Votive stupas, Chaitya Gruhas, pillared hall, congregation hails, tiles, finials Buddapadas, Eppatra pieces, engraved with Brahmelipi recovered from the site of Mangamaripeta hill and reflects the Kalinga and Andhaka schools of Buddism.

BAVIKONDA
Bavikonda is a hill on the North west of Timmapuram is situated in between Visakhapatnam and Bheemunipatnam Beach road and located at 2 Kms. Interior from the beach road point. On the hill noticed a Buddist site in the middle of the plain with antiquities
like religious structures, stupas, Chaitya gruhas, congregation hall, platforms, viharas, stuccofigures and coins are found here. The entire complex comprises 26 structures belonging to 3 phases. The artifacts recovered here include Roman coins and satavahana coins apart from pottery dating back to 3rd century BC and 2nd Century A.D. The discovery of relic caskets in the Maha Chaitya is significant.

PAVURALA KONDA
Pavurala konda is a local name of the hillock lying to the west of Bheemunipatnam is located at about 24 Km. from Visakhapatnam. This is situated at a height of 168 meters high above sea level. It covers an area of 10  to  12  Acres.   It  is  situated  at  a  very   imposing
position and commands a panaromic view of the curve linear coast line with a cresent shaped valley and is flanked by a chain of hills on the south west and northwest. Nearly 16 rockent cisterns for impounding rain water are found over the hillock. Based on pottery and Brahmilable inscription encountered at the sight dates back from 1st century BC to 2nd century AD.

BHEEMUNIPATNAM
Bheemunipatnam, the Mandal Headquarters is situated at a distance of 34 Km. from Visakhapatnam. It is one of the oldest Municipality in the country having been established as early as 1861 AD. This place as a settlement of the Dutch, who built a Fort and a factory
in the 17th Century AD. The most important aspect of interest at the place is the beach which is perhaps matchless for its beauty all along the east coast. It is a usual resort for sea bathers as it is free from dangerous depth and sharks. Nearer the sea and facing the flagstaff is a well equipped round bunglow which it is said was originally the Vizianagaram Raja’s resort. The view of the seascape from the varandah of the bunglow is captivating. This place was an important port in olden days. It has a light house and it is minor port though it is seldom used now. Bheemunipatnam is undoubtedly a place of holiday resort.

BHEEMILI BEACH
Bheemili Beach is an ideal spot for swimming and water sports. The remains of Dutch settlement with a ruined Fort, armoury and Dutch cemetery dating back to the 17th Century preserved here.

GEO PARK (ERRAMATTI DIBBALU)
The Red sand dunes lie on the way to Bheemili are absolutely suitable to develop a Geo Park and is an ideal spot for film shooting.
 

ARAKU VALLEY
Araku Valley is about 115 Km. from Visakhapatnam lying on the top of the eastern ghats. The area of the valley is roughly 36 Sq.Kms. and the altitude is between 600 and 900 meters above mean sea level. The  entire  area  is  inhabited  by aboriginal tribes and
attracts visitors from all over the country. The journey to Araku Valley on the ghat road with thick forests on either side is itself interesting and thrilling. The Ananthagiri hills on the way to Araku Valley are famous for coffee plantation. Araku Valley has an exploratory-cum demonstration farm which is about 20 hectares in extent a Government orchard and a Government silk farm with mulbery gardens. Cocoons from the silk farm are reeled in the farm, and the silk yarn and waste are sent to Hindupur. The beautiful Araku Valley with its bracing climate, orchards and the Ananthagiri ghats, which present an enchanting view to the visitors, is attracting tourists not only from all parts of India also from abroad as there are good communication and halting facilities. The natural beauty of this valley is enhanced by the tribal people who abound here with their own folklore and traditions. Dhimsa Dance is a unique feature of the tribes of Araku, which is being organised in the nights of every Saturday and Sunday for entertaining tourists. There is a railway station at Araku on D.B.K. line passing through dozens of tunnels from Ananthagiri Mandal villages onwards to Araku is a thrilling experience. An habitat museum which reveals the entire tribal culture and an Horticulture nursery cum training centre at Padmapuram and a waterfall at Ranajilleda is worth seeing at Araku.

BORRA CAVES
Borra caves being the natural formation in Eastern ghats is situated in Ananthagiri Mandal at a distance of 100 Kms. from Visakhapatnam and 10 Km from Visakhapatnam to Araku Valley road point. The Dandakaranya   Balengiri – Kirbur  railway  line  passes
through this village and there is Railway station at “Borra Caves”. The caves popularly known as Borra Caves have geological and Historical importance. Deep in the caves there is Sivalingam over which the water drips from above which is said to be the origin of the river Gosthani. The river gosthani flowing from these caves with natural roaring sounds is a beautiful sight to enjoy. These caves were beautifully electrified and illuminated and a large number of tourists including foreigners are visiting every day. The crystal white calcium stones are also seen in various forms like a hooded serpent, different human shapes such as Narada with his tumbura, Lord Brahma, Radha Krishna and Nandi. Mica, Apatite, Calcite, limestone, Red and Yellow ochare, rock phosphate vermiculate, graphite quartz and some of the minerals are found in and around Borra Caves.

TYDA
It is located about 75 Km. from Visakhapatnam on Araku road, Tyda is being developed with camping facilities at Jungle bells to provide an enchanting experience in wilderness to the tourists. A home for variety of wild mammals and avifauna, Tyda is ideal for
viewing wild life and bird watching. Other attractions are rock climbing, trekking and targetting with bow and arrows. They can also learn the language of the jungle, viz., identification of calls, marks, etc. Tourists can enjoy their stay in loghuts and tents set in tribal environs. There is railway station at Tyda on DBK line located 75 Kms. away from Visakhapatnam on the way to Araku.

ANANTHAGIRI
It is situated on the way to Araku Valley, Ananthagiri is a spot with anenchanting beauty. Extensive coffee plantations, numerous waterfalls, of which Tadimada waterfalls are most famous and rivulet add beauty to this place. It is also considered as a health resort.

PADERU
Paderu headquarters of the mandal and division is situated about 110 Kms. from Visakhapatnam. Paderu is a broad picturesque and rich valley with an altitude of over 900 meters above the sea level. The entire Paderu  is  inhabited  by  schedule  tribes with different
sects and is surrounded by good number of hill streams. The presiding deity here is Modakondamma and important religious observation will be celebrated every year attracts a large number of pilgrims and especially fire works will entertain the viewers, like any thing.

LOTHUGEDDA
Lothugedda is situated at about 42 kms. from Narsipatnam of Chintapalli Mandal. The village Contains the ruins of 3 or 4 granite temples of Siva the largest of which has elaborate sculptural depictions. The villagers  believe  that  the  men  of  the builders of the
 
temple and that the barbers were probably roared on the hills in those days

RAJENDRAPALEM
This village lies about 48 km. from Chintapalli. This is the place where Alluri Seetharamaraju organised his famous Pituri against the British administration. A tomb was erected here in his honour.
 

APPIKONDA
This is a small village situated on the coast of the Bay of Bengal at a distance of 18 kms. from Visakhapatnam. Kapilamahamuni is said to have installed the image of Somalingeswara swamy in this village.  So  it  was called  Kapilakonda.  Formerly fisher
men used to live in those places and they called it Apilakonda which is gradually became Appikonda. It assumed religious importance owing to the existence of a Siva temple containing a life size bull carved out of black stone. There are also other small temples around the Siva temple but they are covered with sand dunes and their gopurams along are visible. The Siva temple contains inscriptions of the 12th century AD. These inscriptions mention that this village was granted by a Commander in chief of the Chodas for the maintenance of worship in the temple. The Sivaratri festival celebrated here is attended by a large number of devotees.

ETIKOPPAKA
This village lies on the left bank of the river varaha and is situated at a distance of about 20 kms. to the South of Yelamanchili and about five kms. North west of Narsipatnam road railway station. This place is famous for the manufacture of toys specially prepared with the Ankudu wood.

UPMAKA

The village is located at a distance of one km. from Nakkapalli. On the hill near Upmaka there is a well known shrine of Lord Venkateswara is one of the important worship places for the devotees.
 

GOPALAPATNAM
Gopalapatnam is situated on the left bank of river Thandava in Payakaraopeta Mandal of Visakhapatnam district. It lies about 10 Km. south of Tuni railway station in course of exploration in and around the village   stone  veneered  stupas,  Brick  built  stupas,
 
viharas, title and early historic pottery were noticed in side the village, as also on the hill ranges, locally known as ‘Budhikonda’, ‘Seethammakonda’, ‘Burolametta’ and ‘Veerulametta’. The entire village appears to have been built on ancient habitation.

BALIGATTAM
About 3 Kms. South West of Narsipatnam there lies on the Bank of Varaha river a place known as Baligattam. This place owes its importance to the Brahma Lingeswara Temple at the foot of a small hill on the Western bank of the river. Here the shrine like the one
 
at Bananas faces to the West. It is interesting to note that this temple is supposed to have been built by Brahma and that the river is declared to have been made by Vishnu during his incarnation as a boar(Varaha). Therefore the river is known as Varahanadi. The deposits of white clay on the river bank are supposed to be the ashes of a sacrifice performed hereby Bali, the demon king from whom the village takes its name as Baligattam. The river at this place flows from North to South for a short distance. On account of these peculiarities, the place is considered to be very sacred. The sivaratri festival celebrated here every year attracts a large number of devotees

PANCHADARLA
This village is situated at a distance of about 10 kms. North East of Yelamanchili and 24 kms. From Anakapalli, it derived its name from the five Jets of water coming out of five fountains which receive their supplies from a natural perennial spring. Near by there
 
is lingam on which are carved other lingams in 12 rows of 85 each and which is consequently known as the Kotilingam or Crore of lingams. There are several inscriptions on the pillars of the Mandapam in the temple and two of them dated in AD 1407 and 1428 contain a genealogy of chiefs who claimed Eastern Chalukya ancestry and bore the Eastern Chalukya titles of Sarvalokasraya and Vishnu Vardana.
KONDAKARLA AVA
Kondakarla Ava is situated in Kondakarla of Atchutapuram Mandal. It is famous for its natural lake where some of the birds immigrate from distant places especially during summer period attracts the viewers to enjoy.

ANAKAPALLI
Anakapalli, headquarter of the mandal is situated at a distance of 34Kms. west of Visakhapatnam. This town is importance for wholesale marketing for Jaggery which is exported to various places in the country. It is also famous for sugarcane and guava fruits. The town
is also known for manufacture of brass utensils and household utinsils. The shrine of Kanyaka Parameswari and Nookalamma temples are famous and attracting a large number of devotees.

SANKARAM
Sankaram is a small village which is over six Kilometers from Anakapalli. There are two low contiguous rock hills running east and west which are locally known as Bojjannakonda. They contain some notable Buddhist remains. Three huge  stupas  at three  different  places
 
were cut with great difficulty from the rocks in these hills. The biggest of these is about nine meters in diameter. On the eastern side of the hills is a rock cut temple with numerous Buddhist Sculptures and also a life size statue of Budda. Sankaram is a place of archaeological importance.

PADMANABHAM
Padmanatham lies 16 kms. North West of Bheemunipatnam on the left bank of the Gosthani. Padmanabham is known in the local history as the place where the Raja of Vizianagaram was slain in AD 1794 in the fight with the East India Company’s troops
 
and the spot is marked by a small memory erection. The Padmanabheswara Swamy temple of this place is one of the most important temples of the region. The presiding deity Padmanabha swamy is said to be the lord who readily responds to the desires of his devotees. On the top of the hill which overlooks the place, is the shrine of Padmanabha and the Kalyanostavam of the deity celebrated annually during March-April draws a congregation of large number of devotees.

MATSYAGUNDAM
Matsyagundam is place near Paderu situated in small picturesque valley. A rivulet flows with musical sound in which abundant fish are seen. The wonder here is that the fish come to the surface of the water and take the eatables offered by the visitors. There is a small Shiva

Vizianagaram Fort

Vijayarama Raju-I laid the foundation of Vizianagaram fort in 1713 A.D. on the auspicious day of Vijaya Dashmi. The Victory arch was the main entrance to the Vizianagaram fort prior to the construction of Nagaar Khana. It has a temple of Lord Hanuman on one side and Goddess Lakshmi on the other. The Goddess is also known as �Kota Shakti� or the guardian of the fort. The Raja of Vizianagaram would seek blessings of the Goddess before embarking on any military expedition. The main entrance to the fort is through the East Gate. Nagaar Khana is situated atop this gate. �Nagaara� is an Indian percussion instrument. A literal translation of �Nagaar Khana� would mean �Drum Room�. It was used for drawing attention of the people for announcing royal edicts. The drummer also used the Nagaara to announce and alert the inmates to the arrival of royal guests.The West Gate is the rear entrance to the Vizianagaram fort. This gateway is built in Rajasthani style and has a viewing pavilion on top. It connects the fort to the Pedda Cheruvu and to the royal tombs. As per Hindu customs and traditions, the deceased should be taken for cremation only from the rear door of the household. The West Gate with the royal tombs close by served this purpose. The fort was surrounded by a moat. The area between the west wall and the moat has been converted into a splendid park with well laid out gardens and lush green lawns by the present day administration.
The imposing fort formed the nucleus around which grew the town of Vizianagaram. Depicting the past glory of the rulers, the quadrangular stone fort is evident of the knowledge and skillfullness of the builders and architects of those days.An ancient temple of Pydithalli Ammavaru is situated in this town. Legend has it that one of the daughters of the Pasupati royal family was the reincarnation of the pressing deity, Pydithallamma.
The local believe that with the blessings of the Goddess one can lead a happy & prosperous life. The idol of the Goddess was discovered on Vijayadasimi day way back in the year 1752. To mark the occasion, an annual jatra is held on21st and 22nd October which attracts large crowds. The Moddukovillu temple is unique in that the Shivalinga in the temple has two different colours, symbolizing the male and female aspects of the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The temple was built by an old woman who dreamt about it on her way to the holy city of Kashi ( Banares). Located 60 Kms from Visakhapatnam

GantaStambham

During the British Raj, the Kings of Vizianagaram made frequent visits to London. The Big Ben in London inspired them to make a replica in the town. The Ghanta Stambham (Clock Tower) originally had a sandstone finish with a white top and has now been painted cream and red. This 68 feet high octagonal building was built at a cost of only Rs.5,400. in 1885 and is located very close to the fort, right in the heart of the city .

Motimahal

The Moti Mahal was constructed in 1869 by Vijayarama Raju-III as the Maharaja�s court. The monument echoes memories of a grand past wherein a resplendent king assisted by richly dressed courtiers held court and administered the kingdom in their collective wisdom and goodwill. The main door is decorated with two exquisite marble statues which speak of the good taste as well as the wealth of the occupants. The Moti Mahal is the main and most prominent building in the Vizianagaram fort. It was donated to the MANSAS Trust by Dr. P.V.G Raju. Today, it serves the noble purpose of furthering education by housing a college meant exclusively for women on the first floor. The link with its past is maintained through a display of artifacts in a museum on the ground floor of Moti Mahal.

OUDH KHANA

It offers a glimpse into the fascinating style in which the royalty of Vizianagaram lived. It is an octagonal stone structure, which stands adjacent to the Phool Bagh Palace. It was built exclusively for the Maharajah to bathe. It is a 50 feet high stone structure with spiral steps leading to the water tank on top to which water was pumped from a nearby well

ALAKANANDA PALACE

The Alaknanda Palace was built in 1857 for the royal guests. This opulent palace provided its occupants with all comforts of life in the lap of natural and man-made beauty. The area around the palace is well laid out with walkways and gardens. A runway, built in the grounds, enabled the royal visitors to alight straight from their aircraft into the palace. At present, the Alaknanda Palace is used as the headquarters of the 5th Battalion of the Andhra Pradesh Armed Reserve Police.

KORUKONDA PALACE

A little further away from Alakananda palace, the Korukonda Palace stands majestically amidst open playgrounds and well-laid gardens. The Palace and the surrounding 1,000 acres of land have been developed into a premier educational institution by the Indian Navy, which runs a school for children aspiring to join the armed forces.

PERLA HOME

The Perla Vari home was also built in 1895 and is one of the best-preserved old buildings in the city. It was the first building to have electricity in the region. Amongst other things, the master bedroom of their house boasted of a bed covered with silver. The building had an attached library that is still functional. The main hall is adorned with beautiful chandeliers and period furniture brought from Europe as well as numerous artifacts collected from all over the world.

MR Institutions

The Music College established in 1919 by Vijaya Rama Raju with Adibatla Narayanadas as Principal, with the express purpose of promoting Classical music, Vocal, Veena, Violin, Mrudangam, Nadaswaram and Harikatha were taught. Students from all over the state and also from Southern states like Tamilnadu and Kerala came and joined in the Music College. Sri Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao, Saluru Rajeswara Rao and Smt.P.Suseela, famous cinema singers came from this college and served the country through their concerts and renowned like a shining stars.
Maharaja college was the second Degree College in the Composite Madras State covering the entire South India dating back to 1857. It was started by Vijayarama Raju-III as a middle school to promote modern education in Vizianagaram and was upgraded to a college in 1871. The college came under the aegis of MANSAS in 1958,. The centenary celebrations of the college were held in 1971 and were inaugurated by His Excellency V.V.Giri, the then President of India.
Sanskrit College is a major seat oriental learning devoted to the study of Vedas and their interpretation. It was established by Vijayarama Raju-III who had spent a part of his life amidst Sanskrit Scholars at Varanasi. He has established a Sanskrit School in Vizianagaram in 1860 AD, which was later upgraded to a college in 1900. The first principal of the college, Kilambi Ramanujachari was a great Sanskrit Scholar of those times. At its inception, the college was attached to the Beneras Hindu University, but in 1926 it became affiliated to regional Andhra University.

Bobbili Fort

The Bobbili fort is situated in this ancient town. It is associated with the historic battle between the Raja of Bobbili and Zamindar of Vizianagaram, who is aided by the French. The fierce war established this as a land of heroism, bravery and courage. The impressive Bobbili fort stands as a silent testimony to this hard fought battle, who saw the Raja of bobbili lay his life fighting rather than surrendering. The Venugopala Swamy temple here is quite famous as also the oldest in the district. Located at 60 Kms away from Vizianagaram

Raj Mahal

The Bobbili Rajas built a number of palaces to lavish hospitality on their guests. The Raj Mahal, also known as the Chikkavaram Guest House, is one such palace. It is situated in isolated splendour on the outskirts of modern day town. Visitors to the palace have to traverse a long driveway to reach the palace premises. It was built in 1888 by Maharaja Venkata Swetha Chalapati Ranga Rao.

Bobbili Guest House

Another visible symbol of royal propensity for expenditure on magnificent buildings can be seen in the form of the Guest House which was built by the Raja of Bobbili in 1920, originally as a wedding gift for his son.The building was designed as a leisure resort and had ample recreational facilities for royal indulgence. It also has a beautiful garden spread over acres of land. The four minarets and the central dome of the Guest House are a prominent landmark of Bobbili. The two adjacent outhouses served as servants� quarters and the kitchen.

Bobbili Veena

The Bobbili town is famous for the manufacturing of Veenas carved by the sculptures located in Gollapalli(v) near the Town. Nearly 300 households of this village involved in the preparation of Veenas for their livelihood for the last 100 years. One single piece of Panasa and Sampangi wood is being used for its preparation by the sculptures. There is also a famous Venugopala Swamy temple in the middest of the Town

Thatipudi Reservoir -The jewel of Vijayanagaram, Gantyada Mandal, Vizianagaram

The Thatipudi dam was built in the year 1963-68.The Thatipudi dam is in the Gandyada mandal of Vijayanagaram District.The Thatipudi reservoir is built across the Gosthani rever ,with a capacity of 3.175 TMC water.Gosthni Sarovar Vihar can arrange you a pleasure boat trip.A boat can cost you 600 INR for an hour trip.If you can wait for a dozen people to gather , then rupees 50 per head would do.The ride is pleasure treasure.You can contact vihar contractor on 09959454696 or 09949697764 if you need any special boat. The boat trip takes you way up to Giri Vinayaka statue ( mountain Ganapathi)- check your calories and carry drinking water.
Giri Vinayaka statue on the hill top (the statue may look a bit artificial) but the view around from the mount is stunning.
